We need Help Before Baby arrives? Advice.?

  • Right now my husband brings home about 2500 a month. I bring home about 1200.
Were trying to see if we can budget enough to live strictly on his income.
I am 22 and he is 23. This April he will be getting a raise and will bring about 3k month.
Currently we live in a 3bedroom bungalow.1.5 bath here in michigan.
We do have 10k in Credit card debt but are fiercely trying to pay it off.
My car is paid off and my husbands car gets paid off in 2 years.
With his car and Insurance it is costing us 500 dollars month.
Our Mortgage is 800 and credit cards are about 200 a month. Plus utilities/food.
    Advice, Is this possible?

  • yeah. just live within ur means.and be well disciplined in ur budgeting

  • Sounds like it is possible. My advice is to try to live off his income as much as possible from now on. Use your income to pay off credit card debt as much as possible. Put it all on there if you can. Get rid of it as soon as possible!!!

  • If you wait to have a baby until you are "ready" you will find that you never are "ready". It's true that babies are expensive - day care (mine is $1200 a week in Las Vegas), formula (Costco helps), clothes (grow out of it about every 3 months the first year), furniture, diapers (again Costco), etc. Sounds like you are planning ahead and are trying to lower your bills. That's good. Just don't forget to include a savings account in case one of you becomes ill or a car breaks down.

My husband didn't think we were financially ready either and two kids later, we are surviving.

  • speak to an accountant to work your money out and get your debts paid on a schedule. you should be fine to have a baby but if your worried about the income, an accountant's your best bet.

  • I would say to get on the Birth Control. There is no way you could afford a baby as well.

  • You guys make the same that me n my husband do and we have three boys! You definitely can do this. The key word here though is Future.

Just keep that job going for as long as it takes to pay off that credit card. Even if you get pregnant you can comfortably work for about 6 months. Easy Peasy!

Don't be like everyone else here in America who needs all of this extra new stuff. You just don't need it. Pay off that credit card right away. cut it up first. If you have an emergency use western union from someone. If you get a large hospital bill then ask them for an application for reduction in your bill. This works! Keep that car of yours running! you don't need a new one for like five years. Really.

If you have a good friend or relatives with kids then get all the stuff you can from them. Think about your future and do not go and use those credit cards! Ask for what you need for your baby shower. Better yet try and have two. Look actively on Craigslist for all of those great deals. I don't know how well it is out there but here in Portland Oregon we get about 500-1000 posts a day for Free stuff!

Don't be so consumed like the rest of America and need the best. Shop at Goodwill or whatever second hand store you have there. No one will know the differance. Someone always will have something bigger, better, shinier, so what!

Live by these rules and you will succeed. I drive a ten year old car, but it runs great. I own my own house, all of it! I am 31. In ten years who will care. That's my motto and i stand by it.

Nevermind the people who talk behind your back cause you are two steps in front of them!

    Good Luck

  • I think it's possible! The amounts you gave me add up to $1500 per month...that leaves 1500$ per month for whatever else! Trust me, you guys can make it work if you really want it to!! Do you rent your 3 bedroom bungalow? If so, maybe you could downgrade to a 2 BR? You'll find ways to cut corners and make things work. Also, find out how much childcare is...if you work and he works and childcare is let's say 750/month...then you'd really be only contributing 450$ (1200-750)...

I think you could do it!

If you have a baby shower, hopefully you'll get lots of diapers and wipes to get you through for a while and if you get any giftcards make sure you save them!!

  • I have a generic budget I can send you if you'd like. You can just punch in the amounts you spend and add anything I missed. Let me know what % your husband has taken out in taxes each pay period and I will have it calculate that for you. My e-mail address is califloanofficer@yahoo.com

  • -Use your tax return to pay down bills.
-See if you can get lower car insurance try progressive. you get lower rates when your married, have some college education, etc.
-Try to work through out pregnancy to pay down the bills.
-Could you consolidate all the CC's and the car payment?
-When you have children you always find a way to work things out :)

Why do people not do their regular stuff after baby is born? How soon after giving birth can a new mommy leave her infant with a babysitter and return to work?
